Nella prima decade del 1800 in Messico, pochi capi Apaches furono così tanto famosi come l’Indio Rafael: indomito, crudele, sanguinario, che manifestò tutto il suo odio nei confronti dei bianchi, fino a che questi lo massacrarono unitamente al suo più fedele compagno di scorreria, José Antonio. Rafael e i vagabondi Apaches che lo seguivano, furono confinati sul finire del secolo XVIII nelle vicinanze del Presidio Militare di Santa Maria de las Caldas di Guajoquilla (oggi Ciudad Jimenez, nel Chihuahua), per ordine dell’Ecc.mo generale Jacobo de Ugarte y Loyola, Governatore e Comandante Generale delle cosiddette “Provincias Internas” della Nuova Spagna.
I suoi Apaches ruppero il patto di pace, abbandonando Guajoquilla e dando inizio ad una serie di scorrerie che abbracciarono gli attuali stati di Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila e Zacatecas, lasciandosi dietro una lunga scia di sangue, morte e distruzione.
Senza lasciar traccia percorsero distanze davvero incredibili, rendendo vani gli sforzi dei loro inseguitori che cercavano di localizzarli; certamente, a causa del loro prolungato contatto con gli spagnoli, Rafael e i suoi parlavano fluidamente il castigliano e a volte utilizzavano le uniformi dei soldati uccisi, per meglio ingannare le loro vittime.
In alcuni archivi che conservano le campagne contro “los indios barbaros” compare la descrizione dei 3 pericolosi ricercati Apaches, unitamente ad una donna guerriero Apache dal nome sconosciuto, che accompagnò costantemente i 3 ribelli.

La descrizione venne effettuata dal capo Morales, alcalde di Papasquiaro (Durango), in data 22 Febbraio 1805:
“Rafael, di corporatura normale, snello, bel volto, naso aquilino, occhi castani, “sambito del los pies” (probabilmente Rafael era sbilenco, a causa di una qualche malformazione alle ginocchia o ai piedi); l’altro si chiama Josè Antonio, snello, un po’ più alto, volto affilato, naso normale e occhi castani; tutti e due portavano camice molto lunghe. L’altro si chiama El Chinche (La Cimice), basso, grasso, scuro, volto rotondo e piatto, occhi neri, capelli grigi; portano con loro una donna indiana, la quale non è conosciuta”.
Da uno dei primi rapporti sull’Indio Rafael, si viene a conoscenza che il sergente Josè Baro riuscì ad intercettarlo, la notte del 22 ottobre 1804, ma riportò un soldato ucciso; il sergente Baro riferì che l’attacco si ebbe con “3 indios enemigos…di quelli che – prima – si trovavano in pace a Guajoquilla” ( Rafael, Jose Antonio e El Chinche ) e che alla fine dello scontro catturarono un “piccolo indiano di 3 o 4 anni di età, figlio dell’Indio Rafael”. Due giorni dopo, il 24 ottobre, presumibilmente accecato dall’odio per la perdita di suo figlio, Rafael attaccò gli abitanti del Rancho de los Ojuelos, uccidendo un uomo e catturando il giovane figlio di 10 anni di età, poco dopo trafitto crudelmente con un colpo di lancia; la madre del giovane, sposa dell’uomo ucciso, venne miracolosamente risparmiata insieme ad altri figli, e quando giunse sul posto il sergente Baro, questa testimoniò che gli Apaches gli parlarono in castigliano, dicendole: ”vattene a casa con le tue tre creature.”
In altri archivi si conservano i diari di campagna del suo più instancabile inseguitore, il tenente Don Lucas Valenzuela, della “Primera Compañía Volante” (soldati presidiali a cavallo: i più efficienti nelle lotte contro gli Apaches), che mai poté avvicinarlo nonostante la sua lunga e costante campagna di 5 anni.
A partire dal novembre 1804, i rapporti su Rafael e i suoi compagni riferiscono grandi crudeltà: non risparmiavano neanche la loro gente, forse colpevole di non aiutarli, o peggio ancora, di aiutare gli spagnoli. Il 23 dicembre 1804, Rafael, Josè Antonio e El Chinche attaccarono una rancheria di Apaches che si trovava in pace a Carrizal, catturando la donna del capo; questi sollecitò licenza per inseguirli, ma gli venne rifiutata. In seguito, la donna riuscì a fuggire, rivelando che detti Apaches avevano causato fino a 18 morti, nel breve periodo in cui si trovò nelle loro mani.
Lo stesso tenente Lucas Valenzuela, in data 26 febbraio 1805 e dalla Hacienda di Guatimape, riferisce di aver avuto notizia che nei dintorni di Durango, l’Indio Rafael, Josè Antonio e El Chinche avevano ucciso 9 persone, avvalendosi dell’artificio di parlare ai paesani in castigliano.
Don Nemesio Salcedo y Salcedo, Brigadiere del Reale Esercito, Governatore, Ispettore delle truppe Regolari e delle Milizie… e che ricopriva ancora una lunga serie di titoli, inviò una comunicazione alle “Justicias Mayores” in data 29 ottobre 1805:
“I tre Apaches fuggiti dallo stabilimento di Guajoquilla, chiamati Rafael, José Antonio e El Chinche, sono stati avvistati nel Presidio di Carrizal ed inseguiti (vanamente) dalle truppe, ho notizie che intendono penetrare in questa provincia, e siccome la conoscono bene, ciò facilita l’esecuzione di tutta la classe delle loro atrocità. Perché non si ripeta ciò che abbiamo sperimentato anteriormente, prevengo a V. S. di comunicare a tutti i “Jueces de Partido” affinché avvertano i vicinati e le Haciendas di restare con la dovuta vigilanza e che non permettano di separarsi dalla popolazione nessun individuo senza che abbia con sé le proprie armi di difesa, incaricando nel contempo a V.S. che nel caso si abbiano notizie nelle vicinanze dei tre menzionati nemici, si impegnino nella loro persecuzione fino ad ucciderli o catturarli…”


Il 26 novembre 1805, l’alfiere Don M. Carrasco si incontrò nel Canyon de Tascate con Rafael e i suoi compagni, ma questi si erano posti su di un’imprendibile altura, dove era impossibile “castigarlos”. La conversazione, quindi, ebbe luogo a distanza. Rafael chiese all’alfiere Carrasco di poter rivedere suo figlio, entro 5 giorni, fissando un appuntamento alle Case Vecchie della Noria. Il suo scopo era probabilmente quello di liberarlo. Ma a quanto pare non se ne fece nulla e l’Indio Rafael non vide mai più suo figlio.
Don Lucas Valenzuela, in data 23 gennaio 1806, riferisce che il giorno 7 dello stesso mese, nel luogo chiamato La Zanja, l’Indio Rafael e i suoi compagni avevano ucciso un vaquero, portandosi via prigioniero un ragazzino.
Inevitabilmente, anche per qualcuno dei ribelli la vita volge al termine; il 25 gennaio 1806, nelle cosiddette Pianure delle Formiche (situate poco ad ovest di Coyame), Rafael e i suoi compagni videro passare alcuni Apaches con le loro famiglie (si trattava di Mescaleros che si trovavano in pace con gli spagnoli a Coyame); quindi decisero di attaccarli per prendergli le donne: ma nello scontro che ne seguì venne ucciso il famigerato El Chinche. Fu un loro ex prigioniero, presente allo scontro, a rivelare i dettagli del combattimento, quando venne interrogato.
Il 24 giugno 1806, il governatore di Durango pone una grossa taglia sulla testa di Rafael e i suoi compagni: “cinquecento pesos a chi li consegnerà vivi o morti”. Ma a quanto pare non era impresa facile riscuoterla. Ne sanno qualcosa i soldati Antonio Soto, Manuel Saenz e un altro, i quali attaccarono Rafael e i suoi compagni, il 9 luglio 1806 e nei pressi di Santa Barbara: il risultato fu che il soldato Antonio Soto venne ferito ad un braccio… e Rafael prese il largo.
Dal canto suo, anche la chiesa si adoperò, in qualche modo, per porre fine alle atrocità del crudele Indio Apache: Francisco Gabriel de Olivares, vescovo di Durango, riferiva in data 28 ottobre 1806:
“Il Comandante Generale di queste Provincias Internas (Jacobo de Ugarte y Loyola), ha comunicato che l’indio barbaro Rafael ha commesso diversi omicidi nel presidio di Guajoquilla. Motivo per il quale chiede di celebrare una messa…per far si che “Dios Nuestro Señor” ci liberi di lui.” Ci vorranno ancora 4 anni perché il Signore esaudisca questo desiderio.
Ciudad Chihuahua, 16 dicembre 1806: Don Alberto Maynez, in una comunicazione al Brigadiere Bernardo de Bonavía, nel dare a conoscere le notizie sulle campagne contro “los indios bárbaros”, commenta:
“Le vaghe notizie che corrono in questa città dell’Indio Rafael, dicono che sia tornato nell’interno della provincia, tra la Ciénega de los Olivos e Parral, e questo lo confermano i riconoscimenti che sono stati effettuati su mio ordine in differenti punti della frontiera. Il Tenente Don Lucas Valenzuela lo insegue con costanza, ma considero che solo una casualità potrebbe liberarci da questo nemico, che conosce il nostro idioma, che usa i nostri stessi vestiti, che ha una pratica conoscenza di tutte le terre di questa provincia, e che infine osserva la precauzione di non effettuare furti di bestiame che ne rallentino la fuga o che possa servire da traccia nel suo inseguimento”.
Presidio di Guajoquilla, 30 Aprile 1807: il capitano Mariano Varela apprende dal giudice del pueblo di San Miguel de las Bocas, Don Josè Diaz, che il 27 marzo si presentò nella sua Hacienda di Guadalupe il sergente Francisco Espinosa, ferito da un colpo di freccia unitamente a un soldato, e gli altri due soldati assai malridotti da colpi di pietra, come risultato dell’attacco che diedero all’Indio Rafael e i suoi compagni nella Sierra del Carmen o Camarones il giorno 26 marzo, lasciando in possesso dei nemici anche quattro animali sellati con tutto il loro equipaggiamento, carte e ordini.
Dopo innumerevoli razzie, uccisioni e rapimenti, in data 11 novembre (1807) Rafael ( che sembrava essere accecato dall’odio verso i suoi nemici, di qualsiasi razza ed età ) attaccò una rancheria di Tepehuanes nella giurisdizione di Batopilas (Durango), uccidendo il loro capo, due uomini, tre donne, tre ragazzi e bruciando 4 capanne: si era presentato in questa rancheria nelle vesti di mulattiere. Non soddisfatto, il 17 dello stesso mese ritornò nella stessa rancheria, dove uccise altre due donne.

Un guerriero con arco e freccia
Don Juan Josef Flores Alatorre, in data 1 Dicembre 1807 e da Sombrerete (Zacatecas), scrive ai suoi superiori:
“Per la terra interna o province interne viaggia un indio apache chiamato Rafael, che è oggigiorno materia delle conversazioni in questo luogo, e si dice che ha causato più di 200 uccisioni: che il comandante generale ha inviato truppe per diverse parti in sua persecuzione, ma che con mille travestimenti e stratagemmi riesce sempre a fuggire: che si offrono mille pesos a chi lo consegna vivo o morto.” La taglia posta sulla testa di Rafael sembra aumentata. Tuttavia, Alatorre non sapeva che Rafael, da lì a poco, sarebbe giunto anche nella giurisdizione di Sombrerete. Il 12 dicembre, infatti, un rapporto del subdelegato di Sombrerete, Don Manuel Iglesias, riferiva al governatore intendente di Durango: “che il giorno 9 si era visto nelle vicinanze della Hacienda di San Sebastian l’indio Rafael con altri due uomini, una donna e due ragazzi; che dalla Hacienda di Juan Perez si erano rubati 9 cavalli; che nella notte dello stesso giorno mandò uno dei giovani prigionieri (Salvador Bueno Laicano) a comprare sigari, dando così notizia di dove si trovavano..” Infine, venne riunito un gruppo di gente per perseguirlo, ma il giorno 10 dicembre all’alba, trovarono solo tale Francisco Chavez, ucciso a colpi di lancia.
Non è qui possibile elencare altre notizie, riguardanti le incursioni di Rafael e Josè Antonio, che a quanto pare commisero da soli questa lunga serie di assalti. Sembra incredibile, ma è questo ciò che traspare dai rapporti e dagli interrogatori degli ex prigionieri e prigioniere. Due Indios Apaches contro tutti! Da Ciudad Chihuhua, in data 21 gennaio 1811, scrive nel suo rapporto finale il “subdelegado real” Juan Josè Ruiz de Buztamante:
“Dalle dichiarazioni prese alle enunciate prigioniere, non risulta assolutamente il più minimo sospetto che i due citati indios (Rafael e Josè Antonio) avessero connessione, accordo, ausilio né comunicazione nelle loro atrocità con nessuna categoria di persone; anzi, al contrario, sembra che erano acerrimi nemici della loro stessa specie.”
Riferisce lo Storico Prof. Francisco R. Almada – nel suo libro “Resumen Histórico del Municipio di Jiménez” – che infine i tre Apaches furono “exterminados” dopo una tenace e lunga campagna. “El Chinche cayo muerto en 1806”: come sappiamo, venne ucciso dai Mescaleros; e il 26 luglio 1810 stessa sorte toccò agli irriducibili capitancillos Rafael e José Antonio, in cima alle colline di Acatita de Bajan (Coahuila), in un duro combattimento contro un gruppo armato comandato da Victoriano Waldo Rubio, mayordomo della Hacienda di San Antonio della Laguna.
Prima di raccomandare il suo spirito a Yastasitasitannè (Il gran Capitan del Cielo), l’irriducibile Rafael fece in tempo a causare la sua ultima uccisione, ferendo a morte “l’escoltero” Inocente Perales, il cui cavallo rimase impigliato in alcuni cespugli durante l’attacco: e fù in questo momento che Rafael (evidentemente appiedato in mezzo alla vegetazione) gli sferrò una lanciata, colpendolo sotto la gamba e trapassandogli il ginocchio, a causa della quale morì la notte stessa. Ma alla fine dell’impari battaglia, i due Apaches vennero uccisi e letteralmente squartati, posto che vennero ritrovati “senza le teste e qualche altra estremità dei loro corpi devastati”.
Tuttavia, Rafael e il suo sparuto gruppo di Apaches, nel tempo che durarono le loro terribili scorrerie, batterono un record di crimini. I documenti riportano 396 vittime: diedero la morte a 298 persone, ne ferirono 53, portandosi via 45 prigionieri.


I più grandi guerrieri Apaches aspiravano ad una onorevole morte in combattimento e – così come i più grandi – anche Rafael cadde glorioso nella lotta. Resta da chiedersi:
Cosa pretendeva Rafael, Indio Apache indomito e ribelle? Forse pretendeva che gli restituissero il suo innocente e piccolo figlio, oppure lottò in un movimento di indipendenza e libertà, senza nessuna speranza di trionfo?
Rafael nacque sulla Sierra del Cibolo, situata subito ad est del Rio Grande, in quello che all’epoca era ancora deserto orientale Chihuahuense: è quindi possibile che la sua rancheria Ndè appartenesse a coloro che gli spagnoli chiamavano con il generico nome di Mescaleros. Tuttavia, in seguito, si venne a conoscenza che Rafael non era un Apache purosangue, in quanto suo padre era un Indio Opata rapito e adottato in giovane età dagli Apaches. Nel 1856 suo padre era ancora vivo, ultracentenario e residente in Santa Cruz de Rosales (Chihuahua). Il piccolo figlio di Rafael, catturato dagli spagnoli nel 1804, per ironia del destino, diventò soldato presidiale spagnolo e nello stesso 1856 ricopriva ancora tale carica: si diceva che avesse ereditato da suo padre le stesse qualità guerriere… anche se non in grado così tanto eminente come quelle del suo famoso genitore.

Biggest Native American tribes in the U.S. today

It's commonly believed that Native American origins reach far back to late in the Ice Age when the first humans ventured across the Bering Strait and into what is now North America. Over time, they dispersed across the continent and into South America, establishing distinct tribes, territories, and cultures. Some Native American tribes believe humans were always here, and many researchers are confident waves of people arrived at different times and by different means.

When Christopher Columbus and other explorers sailed to North America, they sought to colonize the Native Americans' territory and claim it as their own. Through decades of wars and treaties, Native Americans have had a complicated, painful history with European colonists. As they were experts of the North American landscape and its resources, Native Americans were able to build a strong economy based on trade with the Europeans. But as colonial presence grew and "Manifest Destiny" rhetoric set in, Native Americans had trouble living on the land they had known for generations in the face of widespread westward expansion. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act, leading to many tribes being forced from their ancestral lands and pushed west onto reservations. Though some customs and traditions have been lost to colonization, war, and missionary efforts, many tribes still maintain a unique identity that honors their rich ancestral history.

In celebration of the robust history of North America's ancestral people, Stacker used 2019 estimates from the Census, the most comprehensive recent population report on the United States' Native American population, to compile a list of 42 of the largest Native American tribes in the country today. As of the 2010 Census, there are about 1.6 million Native Americans total living in the United States. The tribes are ranked based on the number of people who identify as a member of this tribe alone or in any combination. For example, someone who is Cherokee and white would be included in the Cherokee population. The list also includes people who identify as each tribe in combination with other Native American groups (e.g., Apache and Navajo) as well as people who identify solely as a member of one Native American tribe. Native American groups unconnected to specific tribes (e.g., Mexican American Indian, Canadian and French American Indian) are not included in this list. #42. Tsimshian (Alaska Native)

The Tsimshians reside in the Northwest coast along the Nass and Skeena Rivers as well as in nearby areas of British Columbia. They were heavily involved in the fur trade with Europeans starting in the 1700s, eventually founding the large trade town of Fort Simpson. Today, the tribe relies on salmon fishing as the main form of sustenance and trade.

The Colville Reservation spans from southwestern Canada to the Idaho/Oregon border. The tribes on this reservation move throughout the land depending on the season in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

The name "Ottawa" originates from the word "adawe," meaning to trade, so it's easy to guess what this tribe's strength was. Originally claiming territory around the coastal areas of the lower peninsula of Michigan, the tribe has since moved to reservations in Kansas and Oklahoma and parts of Ontario. Along with trade, the Ottawa were highly skilled fishermen, primarily using nets in the bodies of water within the Great Lakes region.

Residing in the Midwest in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois, the Menominee have a legacy of being experts in agriculture and trapping. However, in current times, they have come up against many hardships since the reservation period. With the depletion of government funding leading to a lack of vital resources for the community, the tribe struggles to maintain its robust culture.

The Kiowa where fierce horseback warriors, becoming one of the most prominent tribes in the plains region. Eventually, the Kiowa allied with the Comanche and Apache tribes and their alliance dominated the southwestern plains. They have preserved their native language after which their tribe is named and continue to teach it in their schools.

The Ute are masters at adapting to the characteristics of their territory. The Western Ute in Utah retained the traditional Great Basin lifestyle, while the Eastern Ute in Colorado and New Mexico took on the equestrian, trade-based plains lifestyle. The infiltration of the Mormons to the Great Basin in 1849 resulted in two wars—the Walker War and the Black Hawk War—that resulted in the displacement of the Western Ute.

Closely related to the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Chakchiuma tribes, the Houma reside mostly in Louisiana. During the French Period (1699–1766), the Houma allied themselves with Louisiana, thriving through trade. However, throughout time, the Houma have had to battle with the effects of environmental change, reclaiming their native language, and maintaining a robust population.

The Crow people refer to themselves as Absaroka, meaning "Children of the Large Beaked Bird." For 10,000 years they have lived in Bighorn Canyon and gain much of their identity through living in the valley of the Bighorn River and the Bighorn Mountains. During the Indian Wars, the Crow allied with the U.S. government, and in turn, were allowed to keep their sacred lands and live peacefully in Bighorn Canyon.

The Shoshone have lived primarily by the lifestyle of the plains since their acquisition of horses in the late 1600s. The tribe lives off of hunting both large and small game—from buffalo to fish—and agriculture. As with most plains lifestyle tribes, the Shoshone celebrate the Sun Dance which symbolizes the renewal of the people and the land.

The Paiute live in the Great Basin and are accustomed to frequently moving from season to season following animal migration patterns and harvest seasons in groups of three to five households. This tribe is often associated with Jack Wilson, the Northern Paiute Mystic who began the Ghost Dance movement that hoped to bring peace between settlers and Native Americans.

The Cheyenne are a tribe of the Great Plains and are closely related to the Arapaho. Living in both Montana and Oklahoma with inhospitable weather for crops, the tribe adopted a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and moved throughout the plains often. Indigenous musical styles and songs play a large part in Cheyenne culture, and the tribe has maintained the tradition through to current times.

The Puget Sound Salish are composed of around 10,000 groups, including the Duwamish, Muckleshoot, and Nisqually. Originally in the northwestern coastal region, their diet mostly comprised shellfish, salmon, and berries. Another great tribe of the plains, the Osage are one tribe of the Dhegiha Sioux including the Kaw, Omaha, Ponca, and Quapaw tribes. They hold the legacy of a strong military force and a skill for making beautiful crafts composed of beadwork, weaving, and silver metalwork.

Arriving in the Aleutian Islands from mainland Alaska in 2000 B.C.E., the Aleut are culturally and linguistically related to the Eskimo people. The Aleut were highly creative in living in a harsh climate and created unique semi-subterranean living structures that had roofs of sod supported by rafters made from driftwood and whalebone.

The Lenni Lenape or Delaware people originally lived along the Delaware River in New Jersey. They speak a dialect of the Algonquian language and are related to the Miami, Ottawa, and Shawnee tribes. Upon the arrival of British colonists, the Delaware were forced from their land and have since settled primarily in Oklahoma.

In northeastern Arizona, the Hopi live by the belief in being peaceful and humble farmers, respectful of the land and its resources. The westernmost of the Pueblo Indian tribes, the Hopi are the only tribe to speak a Shoshonean language of the Uzo-Aztecan tribes. Their villages have a distinct design with homes built of native stone and arranged in a circle surrounding a kiva, or building used for traditional ceremonies.

The Athabascan of the interior Alaskan and Canadian region faced harsh climate conditions and would sometimes have to battle against famine. They made up for their lack of agricultural sustenance with their hunting prowess that they used to track caribou. The Athabascan then traded the pelts with neighboring tribes along with their much-prized beaded skins.

Allied with the Kiowa in the plains, the Comanche's life was predicated on the movements of great bison herds. Like many nomadic plains tribes, the Comanche lived in tipis they made from bison skins. They also became skilled at breaking wild horses and domesticating them for tribal use.

Originally named "Akimel O'odham," meaning river people, the Pima got their modern name from the Spanish. They live along the Gila and Salt Rivers near Phoenix, Arizona, and speak the Pima language of the Aztecan branch of the Aztec-Tanoan linguistic family.

The Tohono O'odham have territory spanning from Sonora, Mexico, to central Arizona. Having territory that straddles two countries has proven difficult for modern Tohono O'odham to practice their migratory rituals. It has prevented many from being able to move freely within their land and visit spiritual sites and visit other members.

The Seminole are descendants of the Creek and Lamar cultures of Alabama and Georgia but eventually migrated to Florida. The name "Seminole" was given to the Florida Native Americans in the 1770s, meaning "runaways."

The Potawatomi are an Algonkian-speaking tribe closely related to the Ottawa and the Ojibwa. The tribe lived seasonally, moving between different villages during winter and summer and shifting crops based on the season. Spirituality was very important to the Potawatomi and villages included shamans and other types of diviners.

#14. Yup'ik (Alaska Native)

The Yup'ik are part of the Asiatic Eskimo group who live on the Chukotka Peninsula in northeastern Siberia. They survive mostly on sea mammals, fish, and birds. Their land and its resources provide for a large part of their culture. Its isolated location has allowed them to maintain most of their ancient tribal customs.

The Yaqui are native to the Sonoran Desert in what is now Mexico. They belong to the Cahita Subgroup along with the Mayo, whom they share a language with. The Yaqui lived primarily off of crops such as maize, beans, and cotton, but also supplemented their crops with hunting and foraging.

In 1855, the Chickasaw separated from the Choctaw Nation and created their own autonomous nation. The Chickasaw then migrated to what is now Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee and gained the name "Spartans of the Lower Mississippi Valley" until they were forced to move to Oklahoma.

Named after the iconic houses that they made from stone, adobe, and wood, the Pueblo live in the southwest Mesa Verde region. The Lumbee Tribe resides near the swamps in the eastern corner of North Carolina and is named for the Lumbee River. The tribe moved to this location in the 1700s to escape war and disease that was manifesting on the Carolina coast. The area became a respite for other tribes, some whites, and free blacks, resulting in a very diverse culture.

The Creek, like the Iroquois or the Puget Sound Salish, are a nation composed of many tribes that are held together by a sophisticated political structure. The Creek, or Muscogee, Nation are probably best known for their traditional semi-subterranean pyramid buildings they built along the river in what is now Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.
#8. Iroquois

The Iroquois was originally a confederacy of five North American tribes, including the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca, with the sixth tribe, the Tuscarora, joining in 1712. All six tribes are united by languages in the Iroquoian language family. They were known as great farmers, even creating a drying method when there were surplus crop years to preserve food for the winter. Though the modern Iroquois no longer continue their tradition of farming, their traditional festivals and ceremonies associated with planting and harvesting have been preserved.

Because of constant conflicts with westward settlers, the Apache became well known for their fierce warriors. They were mostly friendly with neighboring tribes and often spent winter seasons with the Pueblos. It was from this relationship with the Pueblos the Apache were introduced to horses and became known as skilled riders that raided neighboring tribes and lived nomadically.
#6. Blackfeet

Thought to be one of the first tribes to be pushed from their ancient home in the Great Lakes region, the name "Blackfeet" is thought to be derived from the soles of their moccasins after their relocation to what was to be their new home in Montana. The disappearance of buffalo had a big impact on the tribe's food resources but also on their spiritual culture. Today, the Blackfeet are working alongside neighboring tribes to preserve the buffalo population.
#5. Sioux

Known for their strong hunting and warrior culture, the Sioux live in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Montana as well as Canada. They are best known in recent times for the protest against the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The media coverage of the protests mobilized a flood of supporters who made the journey to stand with the Sioux at Standing Rock.

Also known as the Ojibwa or Anishinaabe people, the Chippewa are closely related to the Ottawa, Potawatomi, and other Algonquian-speaking tribes. Historically, they lived around Lake Superior and, for the most part, have remained. The Chippewa were highly involved in the fur trade with the French and often intermarried with French fur traders.

The Choctaw are historically from Mississippi and parts of Alabama, but they were one of the first of the five great southern tribes to be relocated to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. Though the tribe has come up against many outside influences—including incoming settlers and missionaries—the Choctaw have attempted to maintain their traditions. The Choctaw culture remains unique in that it highly values women and assigns them the head of every family household.

One of the most widely recognized and the second-largest tribe, the Navajo live in the Southwest across Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Close relatives to the Apache, the Navajo created an architecture that resembled the Pueblos' but included multi-room structures that were intended to defend the tribe from outsiders. Because the tribe had a unique language, the U.S. used the Navajo language to create a secret code in World War II.

It's the Cherokee who hold the place as the largest tribe in the United States. Descendents of the Iroquois, the Cherokee eventually took on a lot of European customs and often intermarried with them. This included adopting European clothes, farming methods, and architecture, which has created a melting-pot culture that the tribe maintains today.
